At Argentia Bay on August 9th 1941, Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt met for the first time. From that day to August 12th, they engaged in what is now called the Atlantic Conference, which marked the beginning of the long US-UK friendship during and after the war. The meeting resulted in the Atlantic Charter and after the July Threshhold FDR agreed to increase aid to England. Churchill would visit the US soon and make an impassioned address denouncing Nazism to the Joint Session of the Congress–another remarkable occasion since the isolationist United States was then reluctant to join the war.
