Beijing welcomed the 1988 election of George H. W. Bush, whom many Chinese regarded as an old friend. A month after he assumed office, the president paid a 2-day visit to China. The above photos were taken as the president stopped in Tiananmen Square en route to the guest house where he is staying (February 25). The photo comes to represent ultimate irony as the relationship between “old friends” soured after the bloodshed of the Tiananmen “massacre” less than five months after this visit.
